TARRAJNA DORSEY • Dynamics of Terrestrial Magnetism

Beginning with a review of Leibniz's refutation of Descartes' theory of motion in his Dynamica, Tarrajna then outlines Gauss' investigation of terrestrial magnetism as an investigation in dynamics. The absolute determination of the strength of the magnetic field of the Earth, which is non-uniform and constantly changing, must be consistent with Leibniz's formulation that “The full effect is equal to the whole cause.”
